In 1969 Scully formed his own corporation, Aquarius Electronics, and he was president and sole designer from 1971–1976. In December 1968 Nick Sand, an LSD chemist from The Brotherhood of Eternal Love in Orange County, California, purchased, through an intermediary, a farmhouse in Windsor, California, where he and Tim Scully set up a large LSD lab. Tim Scully and Nick Sand produced, by the summer of 1969, over 3.6 million tablets (300 micrograms each) of LSD they dubbed “Orange Sunshine”, named after the LSD that The Brotherhood of Eternal Love distributed. While Scully spent his time in prison reading up on how to get them out, Sand smuggled in drugs and got his cellmates high.
LSD Doc ‘Sunshine Makers’: What We Learned
When the majority of Brotherhood retired to a ranch near Idyllwild, Gale remained in Laguna Beach and put those talents to use. John Gale joined the Brotherhood of Eternal Love relatively early in its existence. But unlike the other initial members, he was not a true believer in their psychedelic spirituality. He was a surfer and a petty criminal who seemed more attracted to the group for the danger and excitement of their escapades. By his own account, Purcell searched the vehicle and found two kilos of marijuana and hashish strewn about the cabin. Purcell arrested Leary, who was convicted of marijuana possession and on January 21, 1970, was sentenced to 10 years in prison — plus another 10 years added on for a prior arrest in 1965.
Carl Hart: Drug Use For Grown-Ups
“If we could turn on everyone in the world, then maybe we’d have a new world of peace and love. Sand later claimed it got to US soldiers fighting in Vietnam and he hoped to bend their minds in the direction of brotherly love. The pills were found wherever hippies hung out – at Grateful Dead concerts, in communes, Indian ashrams and Afghan hashish havens.
In Heyday Of LSD, Secret Windsor Lab Produced Millions Of Orange Sunshine Pills

The stunt had been organized, the story went, by a group called the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a mysterious “church” of surfers and ex-hoodlums connected to LSD advocate Timothy Leary of “Turn on, tune in, and drop out” fame. The Brotherhood had their own storefront in Laguna called Mystic Arts World, where they distributed the most infamous acid of the 1960s—“orange sunshine,” an LSD pill whose disciples included John Lennon and a young Steve Jobs. We’ve talked about blotter, tabs, and windowpane acid, but what about acid caps? Liquid acid is one of the most common preparations of the psychedelic. But, before LSD is made into a solution, its isolated chemical structure forms a crystal.
- With his friends, he formed the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and registered it as a tax-exempt religious organization with the intention of spreading their combination of psychedelic drugs and new age spirituality.
- As he dove deeper into this way of life, he came across the work of Geroge Gurdjieff, a spiritual teacher who developed a unique philosophy for self-development influenced by a wide range of spiritual traditions from Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, Western esotericism, and psychology.
- If you’re going to take a psychedelic I believe it’s better to do it in a calm, quiet setting.
- On the NMDA transmission was blocked by the 5-HT2A receptor antagonists R-(+)-alpha-(2, 3-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-4-fluorophenylethyl-4-piperidinethanol and ketanserin.
- His drug opened the mind of a young geek called Steve Jobs who said the “profound experience, one of the most important things in my life” inspired him to change the world.
When Scully first took acid in 1965 he felt as though he had become one with god and all of earth’s living creatures. He started hanging out with the Grateful Dead and helping out as one of their sound engineers with fellow LSD enthusiast Owsley Stanley who had already been crowned “The King of LSD” for the purity of his product he had already begun to produce. I still believed then, and I still believe now, that it has a lot of potential for doing a lot of good. But I was no longer convinced that just making a lot of LSD available was suddenly going to cause everybody to have the same kind of experience I did. And even if they did, after a number of years I realized that a lot of my friends who had the similar experiences were still behaving badly in a lot of ways. So the benefits of making LSD in my mind had decreased significantly.

These efforts involved packing drugs into musical instruments, hollowed-out surfboards, film canisters, and even Volkswagen buses in order to ship their stash to the weed-craving masses of southern California. The Brotherhood’s primary goal was to be able to distribute LSD to as many people as possible for as little money as they could manage. California officially banned the substance in October 1966, and a protest three months later in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park called the “Human Be-In” underscored the hippie resistance to the government’s infringing on their psychedelic enlightenment. Journalist Nicholas Schou takes us deep inside the Brotherhood, combining exclusive interviews with both the group’s surviving members as well as the cops who chased them.
- The duo, vital to the rise and fall of LSD in the 1960s, was a kind of alternative odd – if Oscar and Felix did a lot of mind-altering substances.
- Starting in 1968, they began to distribute their signature product, a particularly potent variety of LSD known as Orange Sunshine, for as little as five cents a pop.
- Sand later claimed it got to US soldiers fighting in Vietnam and he hoped to bend their minds in the direction of brotherly love.
- In 1969 Scully formed his own corporation, Aquarius Electronics, and he was president and sole designer from 1971–1976.
- Sands and a partner flooded San Francisco in the late 1960s with millions of hits of acid before they were arrested.

Additionally, these studies have determined that O-H-LSD is not generated during the specimen extraction and analytical processes or due to parent compound degradation in aqueous urine samples. However, these studies have not been conclusive in demonstrating that O-H-LSD is uniquely produced during in vivo metabolism. Phase I drug metabolism was investigated by incubating human liver microsomes and cryopreserved human hepatocytes with LSD. The reaction was quenched at various time points, and the aliquots were extracted using liquid partitioning and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. O-H-LSD was positively identified in all human liver microsomal and human hepatocyte fractions incubated with LSD.
Acid Nightmares

That got me interested enough to find someone selling LSD and buy a couple of doses so that my friend Don and I could take it together. Up until that point I had been studying math and physics and was on the narrow path to becoming a government researcher in physics. After a few months behind bars in Orange County, during which time he refused to tell the cops anything, they let him go. After being introduced by Padilla’s wife, who was also Smith’s niece, I took him out to lunch near the county jail.
For example, neither Canada nor Denmark specifically names ALD-52 as illegal, and neither country bans lysergamides nor related analogs. They don’t need to be much bigger than a single grain of sand for the test to be effective. Place them on separate areas of a white ceramic plate, testing tray, or mug.
Nick Sand: The Acid Alchemist Who Helped Define The ’60s
The Brotherhood was a group of California surfers who evolved into a worldwide drug distribution network. “Brennie,” as Smith was better known, hadn’t been back to California since Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown was governor (the first time) and still dating the country-rock singer Linda Ronstadt. The orange groves of Brennie’s youth had been swallowed up by freeways and mini-malls, and he couldn’t wait to leave. The word on the street – actually the Internet – is that the Orange Crush-colored tabs of the near-mythical strain of LSD at the hallucinogenic heart of William Kirkley’s documentary is still around, if you know where to look. When it was apparent his drug record would prevent him from teaching, he started working as a consultant to a software computer corporation, joining a techie world where LSD use is not necessarily seen as an automatic disqualifier. In Scully’s case, it was the way he ate the same type of spaghetti and butter dinner every night for decades, until health problems forced him to change.
In 1972, Nick Sand, Tim Scully, and other Brotherhood members were arrested and charged with drug manufacturing and distribution following a California-based investigation called Operation BEL, which specifically targeted the Brotherhood. For an in-depth exploration of this story and a firsthand account of what was happening during that time, we strongly recommend watching “The Sunshine Makers,” a documentary released in 2015 that features interviews with both Sand and Scully. This idealism and a sense of purpose inspired many to explore the drug and its potential for personal and social change. As fate would have it, police raided Scully’s Denver lab in 1968, and while he managed to escape arrest, he was out of a lab. Sand agreed to finance a new lab for producing LSD in exchange for Tim Scully’s knowledge of Owsley Stanley’s process. To get back on their feet, Tim Scully taught Sand how to make 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM), which was at the time a still-legal psychedelic, known as “STP,” on the street.
But looking at what could be done with people who have medical issues is really big. Death and dying is important, all other applications are very valuable. There is a lot of evidence that it had powerful medical applications back in the 1950s and early 1960s but it unfortunately got derailed. One of my many regrets is that the work we did shut down research for so many years. I’m thrilled to see that the research is moving ahead and I hope it accelerates.
